Julius Drey was born in Vienna on 1 May 1858, the son of Lazarus Drey and Babette, née Cohn. He studied in the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna and completed his doctorate in 1882. Thereafter he worked in the General Hospital (AKH) as an assistant physician and surgeon in the 1st Obstetric Clinic. In 1886 he became head of the Erstes öffentliches Kinderkrankeninstitut (First Public Paediatric Hospital). From 1899 to 1938 he also had a practice at his home, Wipplingerstraße 13 in Vienna's 1st district. He was a member of the paediatric section of the Gesellschaft für innere Medizin und Kinderheilkunde (Internal Medicine and Paediatrics Society) in Vienna and joined the Wiener Ärztekammer in 1894. In 1893 he married Louise (Aloisie), née Kraus, a sister of the Austrian writer Karl Kraus, born on 22 July 1863 in Jitschin, Bohemia (now Jičín, Czech Republic). The couple had no children. They were of Jewish origins and persecuted by the Nazis as Jews after the annexation of Austria to the German Reich. As Jewish doctors were forbidden from working, Julius Drey closed his practice on 17 July 1938. In a letter from Aloisie to the Vermögensverkehrsstelle (Property Transaction Office) of December 1938, she stated that the couple had had no income since July 1938 and at the end of the year were completely without means. Julius Drey died on 29 April 1939 at the age of eighty-one in his apartment in Vienna and was buried on 3 May in the Central Cemetery. Aloisie Drey was deported on 22 July 1942 to the Theresienstadt ghetto and murdered on 10 October 1942. Her last place of abode before deportation was the collective housing at Czerningasse 4/5 in the 2nd district.

During provenance research at the Zweigbibliothek für Geschichte der Medizin an der Universitätsbibliothek der Medizinischen Universität Wien a book belonging to Julius Drey with the stamp "Dr. Julius Drey Wien I. Stubenbastei 10" was discovered. According to the inventory and the handwritten entry in the book itself, the former Institutsbibliothek für Geschichte der Medizin (history of medicine departmental library) had acquired it on 25 May 1949 from Antiquariat Alfred Wolf, which had been active in Nazi book looting. The heirs are currently being sought so the book can be restituted.

Adolf Irtl studied medicine and after being awarded a doctorate in medicine and surgery in 1892 opened a medical practice at Alser Straße 16 in Vienna's 9th district. In 1904 he married Alice, née Pellar, a former soloist at the Hofoperntheater in Vienna. In 1905 he was made Hoftheaterarzt (court theatre physician) at the k. k. Hofburgtheater (from 1918 Burgtheater), where he had already worked since 1901 and was to continue until 1937. Until the end of the First World War, where he served as an army doctor, he was also Hofarzt (court physician) to the future Empress Zita of Bourbon-Parma and in 1919 joined the Staatsamt für soziale Verwaltung (State Social Administration Office) (from 1920 Federal Ministry of Social Administration), which he left in 1923 with the grade of Regierungsrat. Between the wars, he held various positions in professional associations and lobbies, for example in the Wiener Ärztekammer and the Gesellschaft der Ärzte in Wien (GdÄW). He had joined the latter in 1906 and in 1923 became its asset administrator, and he was a member of the administrative board until the annexation in March 1938. He was also involved from 1904 in the antisemitic Verein deutscher Ärzte and from 1908 in the antisemitic and German Nationalist Deutscher Klub founded by the Pan-German League. The political assessment for the NSDAP Gau personnel office in April 1940 said of him: "As early as 1919 he supported the nationalist idea and gave voice to his antisemitism. " He applied to join the NSDAP in 1 March 1938 and after the annexation sought to join the local NSDAP section Wien-Stadtpark and became a member of the NS-Ärztebund. After the medical historian Isidor Fischer had been expelled in March 1938 on account of his Jewish origins, Irtl took over his function as librarian and head of the Bibliothek der GdÄW. In the following months, he wrote to former members of the GdÄW who had been expelled on racial grounds demanding payment of their subscriptions. In March 1938 the Gau chairman of the National Socialist Ärztebund for Vienna appointed him asset administrator, and through the Stillhaltekommissar (liquidation commissar) he became temporary director of the GdÄW. Until October 1938, Irtl applied to the dean of the Medical Faculty, the representative of the Reichsärzteführer Rudolf Ramm, the head of the Gau health department and the Ministry of Internal and Cultural Affairs with a view to securing the contents of the GdÄW library and the continued existence of the GdÄW, and also sought to re-establish the society on National Socialist principles. On 17 May 1938 the GdÄW was integrated in the Wiener medizinische Doctoren-Kollegium and on 16 December 1938 made answerable to the Reichsärztekammer Munich and its assets taken over by that body. From 1939 only the newly established Wiener medizinische Gesellschaft existed as the successor to the GdÄW and the other disbanded medical associations. The Wiener medizinische Bibliothek – Billrothhaus was attached to this new organization and headed by Irtl until April 1945. Between 1941 and 1943 Irtl published the "Jahresbericht [annual report] über die Wiener Medizinische Bibliothek Billrothaus" in the Wiener medizinische Wochenschrift, in which he documented the additions to the library in the form of purchases, gifts or the exchange of duplicates, including the acquisitions donated by Alfons Rosse, head of the Vienna Gestapo press office. After the liberation of Austria, Irtl was suspended from his functions in the GdÄW on account of his NSDAP membership. He died on 27 May 1947 in Vienna.

Richard Löwi studied in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Vienna, where he obtained his doctorate in 1905. In 1907 he opened a general practice at Novaragasse 20 in Vienna's 2nd district, where he also lived with his family. He married Sophie Löwi, née Heller (born in 1899) in 1923 and had two children, Margarete Berta and Robert. Because of his Jewish origins, Richard Löwi and his family were subject to increasing repression following the annexation of Austria to the Nazi Third Reich. In his asset declaration of 15 July 1938 he listed partial ownership of properties in Vienna, including the apartment building at Novaragasse 20 in the 2nd district, along with a gold pocket watch, a wedding ring, a tie pin and a private library. The medical inventory of his surgery, which he was subsequently obliged to renounce, was assessed by F. Reiner & Co. The properties were expropriated and sold. Löwi hoped to use the proceeds to flee the country with his family. But it was too late. He and his wife Sophie and the children were deported on 15 February 1941 in the first of two transports from Aspang train station to the Opole ghetto in the district of Lublin in the Generalgouvernement. The whole family was murdered there.

According to an entry in it, a book with the handwritten name of Richard Löwi – confirmed by comparison with other written samples as having belonged to his private library – was purchased on 3 February 1942 by the Institute of the History of Medicine, now Zweigbibliothek für Geschichte der Medizin (history of medicine branch library) from Antiquariat Alfred Wolf. The heirs are currently being sought so that the items can be restituted.

Oskar Reichel, a Jewish doctor living in Vienna, was a major art collector. He was inspired to start collecting by the works of the Austrian painter Anton Romako, which he says he saw for the first time around 1900. There were also works by more recent artists in his collection, however. Unusually for the time, Reichel exhibited his private collection in 1913 at Galerie Miethke in Vienna, with over forty paintings by Romako as well as works by Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, Max Oppenheimer, Anton Faistauer and Albert Paris Gütersloh, but also Vincent van Gogh and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. In subsequent years he frequently loaned his paintings and through his friendship with Arthur Roessler, director of Galerie Miethke, also met some of the above-mentioned artists. His interest prompted him to open his own gallery in the early 1920s, affiliated to the company Kunst und Wohnung, R. Lorenz, GesmbH at Josefstädter Straße 21 in the 8th district, which he also co‑managed. Following the annexation of Austria in 1938, Reichel was forced to sell some of his collection. Romako's paintings were sold through the art market and privately and ended up in some cases in Austrian museums and collections. Vita Maria Künstler and Wolfgang Gurlitt were heavily involved in these transactions.
Reichel, who ended up in the Jewish community old people's home in Vienna, died there on 7 May 1943. His wife Malvine was deported in January 1943 to Theresienstadt. After the war she lived for a short time in Vienna before moving to New York to her son Hans, who had fled to the USA in 1939. Her son Raimund had emigrated in March 1939 to Argentina via Paraguay and later returned to Vienna, where he died in 1997. The oldest son Max was murdered on 10 July 1940 at the National Socialist "euthanasia" institute at Brandenburg an der Havel.

To date, twenty-three works belonging to Reichel's collection until March 1938 have been found in the following Austrian museums and collections and restituted: Albertina, Leopold Museum Privatstiftung, Oberösterreichisches Landesmuseum, Universalmuseum Joanneum and Wien Museum.

Josef Thenen was born on 21 August 1866 in Galati in present-day Romania into a Jewish merchant family. He had a sister Carolina and a brother Adolf. After attending the Leopoldstädter Communal-Real- und Obergymnasium he studied medicine at the University of Vienna from 1884 and obtained his doctorate in 1890. His first marriage was to Hermine Doctor from Náchod, Bohemia. The marriage was childless. After divorcing her, he married Isabella "Bella-Charlotte" Rottenberg from Galati in 1893. This marriage was also childless. He continued his training, first as an assistant physician at the General Hospital in Vienna at the clinics run by Hermann Nothnagel and Friedrich Schauta, and carried out a number of experiments at the pathology laboratory headed by Samuel von Basch. He was a member of the Internationales Komitee für das ärztliche Fortbildungswesen (International Committee for Continuing Medical Education) and was instrumental in the introduction of advanced training in Vienna and Lower Austria. In 1905, he was the first to suggest the administration of adrenaline as a treatment for shock, a therapy that is still used today. He is also regarded as the inventor of the catalytic oxygen bath. His insistence on liability insurance for doctors resulted in the founding in 1910 of the Unfall- und Haftpflichtversicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft Kosmos with himself as chairman of the board of administrators. In 1920 he was appointed Obermedizinalrat, and 1923 member of the Oberster Sanitätsrat (Supreme Health Council). From 1920 to 1936 he was president of the Wiener Ärztekammer (Vienna Medical Chamber). In 1928 he became Hofrat and member of the Federal Committee of the Austrian Red Cross Society. During all of this time he had an internal medicine practice at his apartment at Ferstelgasse 1 in the 9th district. In March 1938 his practice, according to his own statement, effectively ceased to exist.

After the annexation of Austria to Nazi Germany, Josef and Isabella Thenen were persecuted by the Nazi regime because of their Jewish origins. On 1 August 1939, Josef wrote to the head of the Städtische Sammlungen Wien that he had been given "notice to leave the apartment he had lived in for forty-six years in implementation of the Jewish laws" and that he therefore no longer had room for the plaster statue Gladiator and Conquered Slave by Viktor Tilgner, which he therefore proposed to "donate" to the museum. Thenen was paid a "token amount" of 100 Reichsmarks. On 16 October 1939 Josef and Isabella Thenen were registered as having left Vienna for Romania, the country of their birth. Isabella died on 1 July 1942, Josef on 15 January 1949 in Braila. Thenen's divorced first wife Hermine Doctor perished on 23 September 1942 probably during her transport from Theresienstadt to the Maly Trostinec extermination camp. The Wien Museum restituted the plaster statue in March 2012 to the legal successors of Josef Thenen.
