Robert Eigenberger studied art history at the German University in Prague and wrote his doctoral thesis in 1913 on the sculptor Adam Krafft. The same year he became an intern and later an assistant at the k. k. Zentralkommission für Denkmalpflege (Imperial Royal Central Commission for Monument Conservation) in Vienna. During the First World War, he volunteered in May 1915 but was discharged six months later, having been seriously ill with typhoid fever, and was then employed collecting metal for the war effort. In 1917 he was appointed curator of the Paintings Gallery of the k. k. Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien (Imperial Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna). In his function from 1922 as director of the Paintings Gallery he reorganized the display and published a comprehensive inventory in 1927. He was also a freelance painter, winning the Österreichischer Staatspreis für Malerei (Austrian State Prize for Painting) in 1930 and was a member of the Vereinigung bildender Künstler Wiener Secession (Society of Fine Artists – Vienna Secession). In 1926 he was awarded the title of professor and from the summer semester 1927 was also an honorary lecturer in art history at the Viennese Akademie. From 1930 at the latest he was also an assessor and expert at the Dorotheum. In 1933 he was put in charge of restoration in the Paintings Gallery and gave a restoration course at the Akademie. He was subsequently appointed extraordinary professor and became head of the Department of Conservation and Technology in 1934. By his own admission, he carried out intelligence work for the illegal NSDAP from around 1934 but did not officially become a member until May 1938. At the same time, he changed his religion from Roman Catholic to "gottgläubig" ("religious"), became a supporting member of the SS and NS-Dozentenführer (NS senior lecturer) at the Viennese Akademie. In 1940 he was appointed ordinary professor and was given the Erinnerungsmedaille (Memorial Medal) on 13 March 1938 for his "National Socialist activity during its illegality". This was followed in 1942 by the Silbernes Treudienstehrenzeichen (Silver Loyalty Medal of Honour). Eigenberger was the Akademie's air raid officer responsible for salvaging works from the Paintings Gallery and deciding which items in the collection were to be stored for protection during the Second World War. From 1939, for example, he organized the transfer of over 600 objects to external depots inside and outside Vienna. Around 1,300 works, categorized by him as third-class, were left in the Academy building, around 520 of which were destroyed or disappeared when it was hit by a bomb on 12 March 1945. Moreover, 120 items stored in external depots were lost through looting and other causes.

Eigenberger was relieved of his position in June 1945 but was able to resume teaching at the Akademie in November 1946. According to a decision by the Federal President of 13 September 1947 he was classified as a lesser offender on account of his "exceptional knowledge", and in 1949 he was made extraordinary professor. That year the Federal Ministry of Education investigated Eigenberger, accusing him of having caused sustained damage during the restoration work carried out by him in 1938/1939. The expert opinions by Ludwig Baldass, Otto Benesch, Karl Garzarolli-Thurnlackh, Josef Hajsinek and Franz Sochor in early 1949 questioned Eigenberger's qualification as a restorer and head of the masterclass for restoration and technology. Eigenberger had no training as a restorer but was self-taught. As the committee established to examine the reproaches—four of the five members were professors at the Akademie—did not reach any satisfactory conclusions, the Ministry of Education called in an external expert in 1950/51, which led to protests by the teaching staff at the Akademie. The records do not show what consequences this had for Eigenberger. At the staff meeting of 1 June 1951 he was elected rector of the Akademie for the academic years 1951/52 and 1952/53, and he held this position again in 1954/55. He was pro-rector in 1953/54 and 1955–1957 and became an ordinary professor in 1955. After his retirement on 27 July 1961 he remained head of the masterclass for conservation and technology and also gave a course in this subject. From 1962 to 1965 he was chairman of the Akademie's Institut für sakrale Kunst (Institute for Sacral Art). He retired from active service on 30 September 1965. After receiving the Goldenes Lorbeer (Golden Laurel) of the Vienna Künstlerhaus in 1960, he was awarded the Große Ehrenurkunde (Great Certificate of Honour) of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1978 and honorary membership of the Genossenschaft bildender Künstler Wiens (Künstlerhaus) in 1977.

After attending the Graphic Arts School in Vilna (Vilnius) from 1885 to 1888, Jehudo Epstein studied from 1888 to 1894 at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien (Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna) under August Eisenmenger and others. While still a student, he already won prizes and scholarships. In 1901 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus, where he attracted attention through his participation in many exhibitions and for his awards and artistic and social engagement. He no longer appeared in the list of members after 1941. His success as a painter of landscapes, portraits and genre scenes, often featuring Jewish folk life, is demonstrated by his participation in numerous international exhibitions. His works were included in prominent collections such as those of Theodor Herzl, Bernhard Altmann, Fritz Grünbaum, Wilhelm Freund, Oskar Neumann and Heinrich Rieger. In 1934 Epstein set off with his wife Auguste Maria Epstein, née Schellnast, for a study trip to South Africa, which he extended on account of the commissions he was receiving there. It is presumably for that reason that in 1936 he had the movable assets from their apartment and studio at Himmelstraße 43 in Vienna's 19th district put in storage in Bernhard Altmann's factory. An inventory was drawn up at the time, which included not only interior furnishings but also 190 paintings by Epstein. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich, Epstein, who was Jewish, declined to return to Austria. During the Aryanization of Altmann's factory, Epstein's depot was also cleared out.

Epstein died on 16 November 1945 in Johannesburg. His widow Auguste attempted unsuccessfully in 1947 and 1966 to discover the whereabouts of the items stored with Altmann. The painting Camposanto in Venice found on the premises of the Landesarbeitsamt Niederösterreich (Lower Austria Department of Employment) was the only item returned to Auguste Epstein in 1949/50. In the restitution hearing, eyewitnesses stated that after Altmann's factory had been Aryanized, some of the pictures stored there were transported to the Dorotheum in Vienna, hung in the former factory after Epstein's signature had been overpainted or handed over to Auguste Epstein's mother. No proof has ever been provided for any of this. In investigating the whereabouts of the items stored with Altmann, a large number of auction bids for Epstein's paintings in the years after 1945 have cropped up. It was not until the provenance research from 2009 to 2013 that more of Epstein's paintings from Altmann's factory have been identified and returned to the heirs of Jehudo and Auguste Epstein. They were found in the collections of the Vienna University of Applied Arts and the Jewish Museum Vienna. The whereabouts of most of Epstein's property stored with Altmann remains unexplained.

After working in the early 1920s as Prokurist (authorized signatory) in Hans Neumann's advertising studio, Otto Löbl opened Reklameatelier Otto in January 1925 at Graben 29a (Trattnerhof 2) in Vienna's 1st district, which was one of the most successful commercial art studios in Austria before 1938. It mainly designed posters and publicity products, ranging from cinema, theatre and jazz concert posters to promotional material for food, fashion articles, pest control and the Vienna fair. His customers included companies like Hammerbrotwerke, Kathreiner, Meinl, Bären-Lacke, Suchard, Blum-Haas and Jawo and the Gerngross and Stafa department stores. By the end of 1928 he employed ten draughtsmen/women and artists including Robert Schmidt, Elisabeth Buzek, Erwin Kaltenbrunner, Kurt Schwarz and Margit Doppler. In 1933 Reklameatelier Otto moved to Riemergasse 6 in the 1st district, where the Löbl family also lived. As a member of the Jewish community, he was obliged to close the business after March 1938, and his trade licence was cancelled. On 21 May 1938, shortly after the Löbl family had fled from Austria to the USA, the Dorotheum auctioned their furniture and household items, paintings and books. Reklameatelier Otto was deleted from the commercial register in November 1939. The whereabouts of the furnishings from the studio and apartment are unknown today.

Margarethe Poch-Kalous studied art history at the University of Vienna and obtained her doctorate in 1940 under Hans Sedlmayr. After working from autumn 1940 in Robert Eigenberger's Institut für Konservierung und Technologie (Institute of Conservation and Technology) at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien (Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna), she obtained a lectureship in art history the following year at the Akademie Meisterschule für Kunsterziehung (Art Education Master School). She also built up the Institute library, managed the Akademie's slide archive, collaborated in Joseph Gregor's ultimately unpublished history of the Akademie and edited the catalogue to mark the Akademie's 250th anniversary in 1942. She was also involved in storing the Akademie Paintings Gallery during the Second World War. After Eigenberger's suspension as director of the Paintings Gallery in June 1945, she took over the directorship temporarily because, unlike Eigenberger, she was politically unimpeachable. She does not appear to have been a member of the NSDAP or its associated bodies. As temporary director she was responsible for the return transport of the objects stored in Lower Austria and the Salzkammergut, the rebuilding of the Paintings Gallery, which had been hit in an air raid on 12 March 1945, and the repair and restoration of many artworks that had been damaged, in some cases seriously, during the war. In spite of this work, she was not chosen to succeed as head the Akademie Paintings Gallery and was replaced in 1947 by Ludwig Münz. She continued to work in the Paintings Gallery and was employed from autumn 1947 as an assistant at the Akademie. After Münz's unexpected death, she was finally put in charge of the Paintings Gallery in 1957 and was appointed director in 1968, a position she held until her death in 1974.

Moriz Reichenfeld worked from 1880 to 1907 at Union-Bank, becoming its Prokurist (authorized signatory) in 1890. Through his relationship to Gisela (Ella) Naschauer, a sister-in-law of Theodor Herzl, he was in close contact with Zionist circles. After Herzl's death in 1904, he was executor of his will and one of the two guardians of his children. After leaving Union-Bank, he lived from his own means and his bank director's pension. He had a porcelain, ceramics and glass collection as well as carpets, silverware and valuable furniture. His asset declaration after the annexation in 1938, which he was obliged to make on account of his Jewish origins, also listed eighty-eight oil paintings, watercolours and prints, as well as five modern bronzes, including works by Max Suppantschitsch, Oskar Larsen, Josef Danhauser, Peter Fendi, Jehudo Epstein, Tina Blau, Albin Egger-Lienz, Adolf Curry, Hans Makart and Egon Schiele. In 1938 and 1939 he sold some of his painting, porcelain and glass collection via the Weinmüller and Dorotheum auction houses in Vienna. He died shortly afterwards on 12 January 1940 in Vienna. None of the auctioned objects have been located to date.

Anselm Weißenhofer completed his Catholic theology studies in 1908 and became a priest. In 1919 he obtained a doctorate in art history and habilitated four years later in ecclesiastical art history at the University of Vienna, subsequently lecturing in the Faculty of Catholic Theology and the Kunstgewerbeschule (Arts and Crafts School) in Vienna, where he was appointed extraordinary professor in 1930 and also taught general history of art. Apart from working as a secondary school religion teacher, he was curator of the Schottenstift picture gallery from 1925 to 1930. Many publications and memberships – among others, as chairman of the art section of the Leo-Gesellschaft in Austria, in the Neuer Werkbund, the Gesellschaft zur Förderung österreichischer Kunst im Ausland, the Wiener Vereinigung bildender Künstler and the Wiener Secession – confirm his interest in art history, particularly religious art. Although becoming a member of the Reichskammer der bildenden Künste (Reich Chamber of Fine Arts) in July 1939, according to his personnel files, remuneration for his teaching at the University of Vienna and Kunstgewerbeschule was suspended for ideological reasons. He continued to lecture and organize excursions at both schools, however, and was appointed as an unbudgeted professor in 1940. In May 1940, Cardinal Theodor Innitzer appointed him director of the Dom- und Diözesanmuseum (Cathedral and Diocese Museum). The Gaupersonalamt (Gau personnel department) listed him as a Catholic priest with nationalist inclinations and not hostile to National Socialism. He retired as a secondary school teacher in 1943 at the age of sixty. In October 1945 he once again obtained a lectureship at the University of Vienna and the Hochschule für angewandte Kunst (College of Applied Arts), as it was now called, in Vienna. From October 1947 until 1959 he also taught at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien (Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna).

Alfred Wolfgang Wurzbach-Tannenberg

Alfred Wolfgang von Wurzbach-Tannenberg started studying law at the University of Vienna but switched after the Second State Examination to Romance philology. He obtained his doctorate in 1902 at the University of Tübingen, and habilitated in 1907 at the University of Vienna. After a few years as lecturer at the Institut für Romanistik (Institute of Romance Philology) in Vienna, in 1922 he was appointed extraordinary professor of Romance languages and literature. On 28 May 1938 he was forced to retire from the University of Vienna at the age of fifty-eight. His application for membership of the Reichsschrifttumskammer (Reich Literature Chamber) was rejected because he was considered a "first-degree Mischling" and also ideologically unsound. This conflicts with the assessment by the Vienna Gaupersonalamt (Gau personnel department), which states that he was sympathetic to the National Socialist movement. Wurzbach-Tannenberg is not known to have been a member of the NSDAP or affiliated bodies.

On 28 February 1946 he was appointed by the Federal President as ordinary professor of Romance languages and literature at the University of Vienna, backdated to 27 April 1945. Wurzbach-Tannenberg possessed an extensive collection of books, autographs, portraits and historical medals, which he had written about in 1943 in Katalog meiner Sammlung von Medaillen, Plaketten und Jetons, zugleich ein Handbuch für Sammler. He had also inherited an art collection from his grandfather Joseph Ritter von Lippmann-Lissingen (1827–1900), which included paintings by Old Dutch masters. He bequeathed thirty Dutch pictures and some small-format paintings in 1953 to the Paintings Gallery of the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien.
